We recommend your child to be seen within six months of the eruption of their first tooth. This appointment is to get your child introduced to our dental clinic and meet Dr. Knox and her team.
We will introduce you and your child to the office and team. Your child will get their own private room, get to select the TV show they want to watch, and get to meet their hygienist and Dr. Knox. We want this first meeting to be fun, so they have positive experiences moving forward.
We will sit down with your child and some fun props to teach them about brushing, flossing, cavities, and nutrition. Parents are encouraged to ask questions and help with the education process.
Most dental anxiety in children comes from the strange noises and seeing things they’ve never seen before. We want to get them familiar with the dental equipment and noises in our office. We let them push the buttons on our water and air squirter, we let them hear our water whistle (dental drill), we practice with Mr. Thirsty (suction) on their hand, and we give them a ride up and down on our dental chair. This helps them understand the instruments we use allowing them to relax at their appointment.
We will starting “counting” their teeth, getting them familiar with opening wide and examining their teeth as we count. Then, we start polishing and cleaning their teeth. If your child is comfortable, we will try to take dental x-rays at this visit. Fluoride may be applied with the consent of the child’s parent. If your child needs dental work, we will discuss their needs at this time.
At a separate appointment, we offer basic pediatric dentistry including tooth-colored fillings, crowns, extractions, and space maintainers. To reduce your child’s anxiety, we offer most children Nitrous Oxide with their parent’s consent.
We understand that your child has worked hard to be brave and well-behaved during their dental visit, so we have a special reward for them. They will get to choose a small toy to reward them. This is something exciting for them to look forward to at each appointment.
